Buyer’s Guide

While, today, we don’t go to those extremes to get a little salt, in fact, we are glaringly aware that salt is on the list of items we should be cutting down on. We know that the over-consumption of anything is bad for us. Everything in moderation, they say. Lead a balanced life, we hear almost everyday on some form of social media. So, you limit your sugar intake, your fat intake and try to stay away from that lovely fresh white, wheat bread. What about salt?

While we try our damnedest not to over-salt our food whilst cooking and when eating, we don’t generally think about the salt in our drinks, especially our drinking water, but its there and slowly becoming a problem. You may be drinking your 8 glasses of water a day like a good girl or boy, but are you drinking a great deal of salt at the same time? The water doesn’t taste salty, you say.   Sure, it doesn’t. But the sodium (i.e. Salt) is there. Just read the back of most bottles of shop-sold water and you will see the word sodium.

Why Is Excessive Amounts of Salt Bad for You?

While we need salt in our diet, about 1 gram a day, too much salt has dire affects on our body.

  1. Increases our Blood Pressure (i.e. The amount of pressure that blood puts on our blood vessels as it is pumped around the body)
  2. A Stroke – strokes are generally caused by high blood pressure and we already mentioned above what can cause high blood pressure – Salt!
  3. Coronary Heart Disease – Again high blood pressure can lead to this disease and it makes sense to reduce the salt intake to assist preventing this
  4. Stomach Cancer – a high salt diet increases the risk of Stomach Cancer
  5. Osteoporosis – i.e. The thinning of bones, making them brittle and prone to breaking – high intakes of salt can speed up the loss of calcium in the bones
  6. Obesity – Salt doesn’t lead to weight gain per say, but it makes you thirsty and if the drinks you are consuming are sugary then that in turn will increase your weight and fat gain
  7. Diabetes – Another disease related to high blood pressure
  8. Asthma – Salt cannot cause asthma but some studies show it can aggravate it
  9. Water Retention – Too much salt in your diet will invariably cause water retention in your body, mostly women, and this will show in the way of bloating and puffiness

These are all very good reasons to cut your salt intake right down to the daily maximum of 1 gram.

So, What Can You Do?

While the U.S.A. is ranked number two in the world in the use of the desalination process (i.e. in short removing the salt from water), producing about 16% of the total output, we are still not anywhere near to covering the entire country. We like to think we can rely on the government to attend to all our health needs, especially when it comes to our life-saving water supply, but it is quite a process and a problem that the government is working furiously to remedy.

This means you, if this is a concern to you, need to remove the sodium and other bad minerals from your drinking water. How the heck do I do that, we hear you say? Read our Reverse Osmosis Reviews and choose a Water Filter that will work for you.

What is Reverse Osmosis?

Before we go into the Reverse Osmosis Reviews which detail a few of our firm favorites in Water Filters on the market, we wanted to give you a brief on what Reverse Osmosis is. In short, osmosis is the passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane that blocks the passage of dissolved solutes.

So Reverse Osmosis doesn’t only remove salt but other nasties in the water. Now that you have the low down, from our Reverse Osmosis Reviews, on how you can eliminate that silently killing sodium in your water, choose your favorite and start living clean.
