The proof is in the pudding or in this case the waffle. And to throw in another cliché – a picture tells a thousand words.

So let’s look at a Belgian Waffle.

And now a Regular Waffle.

A connoisseur of waffles or food in general will see the differences immediately, so if you didn’t don’t stress.  The test is also in the tasting, which we will get to in a bit.

What are the differences between Belgian Waffle vs. Regular Waffle?

54ff027681239-0112-oster-flip-belgian-slice-waffle-maker-xlThe pockets, basically. Belgian Waffles are made in a waffle iron, which has a deeper grid pattern. This way the Belgian Waffle can hold gooier, stickier syrup and melting ice cream. Regular, American-style waffles have shallower square pockets.

Another vital difference between Belgian and Regular Waffles is that Belgian batter is made differently, which gives it that end-result crispier finish. Let us explore the batter recipes that make these two waffle styles different.

  • ½ Teaspoons salt
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar

  • 2 cups milk
  • Non-stick cooking spray

  1. Preheat waffle iron – use deep seated waffle type
  2. Take a large bowl and mix together sifted flour, baking powder and salt
  3. Take a second bowl beat together egg yolks and sugar
  4. Beat till sugar dissolved and egg is pale yellow in color
  5. Add vanilla extract, melted butter and milk – whisk
  6. Mix egg and flour mix together but don’t over-mix
  7. Take a third bowl and whisk up egg whites – preferably with an electric beater – till egg whites form peaks
  8. Using a spatula gently fold the egg whites into the other mixture – again do not over-mix
  9. Spray non-stick spray over waffle iron grid
  10. Spoon waffle mix onto waffle grid, enough to just to the top
  11. Cook till brown and extra crispy (remember the pockets are deeper and will need a little extra cooking than a regular waffle iron)
  12. Serve immediately
  13. Toppings can range from syrup, ice cream, spices, cheese, berries and even chopped bananas
