This is an often forgotten or blatantly ignored aspect of creating an accessible room or building. It is one of the easiest adjustments you can make to any apartment though. Unfortunately, some wheelchairs and walkers are just too big for a regular doorway, and this can create an uncomfortable experience for everyone involved. Additionally, in an emergency, this can create a very dangerous situation. Widening a doorway can be expensive but you can also install offset hinges instead that widen the entrance.
Hardwood flooring
It may be the normal thing to do to have carpet throughout an apartment, but it is not conducive to those with mobility issues. Rugs and carpets are just trip hazards waiting to happen. Hardwood flooring or vinyl click flooring can provide better options for those who struggle with mobility. Not only are they just as stylish (some would say more stylish) but they are much easier to travel across.
