Welcome to our detailed look into the best extra firm mattress on the market. These reviews will give you an analysis on each of the products we tested and hopefully help you come to the best nights rest you can find for the right price.
List of Best Extra Firm Mattress ReviewsRight from the get go you can understand why the Serta Killner was given the National Sleep Foundations seal of approval. The moment you lie down on the bed you will feel the cushioned and voluptuous upper layer that is supported by a solid underneath.
On arrival at our doorstep, we found it was super easy to move for a foam mattress (normally these aren't easy). However, just make sure that you have the room for un-boxing. Once opened, although apparent, the Oder was fine considering it was a foam material and the smell of the material can sometimes be an issue in the foam category. The reason for this smell is the 37% polyurethane foam pad and 63% polyurethane foam with instilled gel.
What we loved about the Serta Killner was it's balance of softness and firmness. Don't get me wrong, this is an extra firm mattress, but there still remains a softened feeling on your back and lower body when you lie down. One thing you may need to become acquainted with is the lack of seamed edges. This may be a little disconcerting to those who are used to feeling the seam edge as a signal that you're close to the edge of the bed.
Whenever looking at a foamed mattress, it's important to observe the cooling efficiency as your body is in contact with so much surface, overheating can occur. However, the Serta Killner cut the balance perfectly, we found that we never woke up in a sweat or looking for a cool patch on the surface. An impressive feat for a foam mattress.
|Award winning Lightweight & easy to move Extra firm with soft touch||Slight gassy smell when first unwrapped Lack of seamed edges|
Let's focus in on this "Swirl Gel Memory Foam" technology. It's a stand out because it's able to regulate the flow of air within the mattress. This means that your body never overheats while under the sheets. Furthermore, this same technology acts as a fire retardant. The overall design of the mattress allows for it to lay upon bases that can be adjusted in height or on a normal foundation. So whatever base you have right now, it will work perfectly with that.
There were two stand out features we found when we were testing this item. Firstly, it's reduction in the transfer of motion caused by tossing and turning. It seemed that whoever will be lying next to you would be able to move around all they want and you will not feel a thing. Secondly, the edge support was excellent on the Allassea Perfect Nite, making the surface area feel much larger than it actually was.
The only issue we found was that it was a little heavier than the other mattresses we tested. For example, when it arrived, it required two of us to get it upstairs.
|Fire retardant material Reduces motion of partner Edge support is top notch||Little heavier than expected Delivery issues with UPS|
When it first arrived it came in a air compressed tube that made transportation up our stairs amazingly simple. We also couldn't believe that they threw in a mattress zip cover which as anyone who has being doing their research will know, these are normally an additional (hefty) cost.
On set up, I was worried that the current box springs frame we have wouldn't be enough to support the bed. However, to my relief this frame worked perfectly well and it proves that you only need a sturdy frame to complement the Klaussner Grandeur.
Now, just going to come out and say it, this product was more comfortable than our Tempur Pedic mattress testing as we found it circulated the air more efficiently, causing less sweating than it's competitor.
The only downside we could find was that we have heard reports of the pillow top stitching loosening after a few years of use. This leads to some of the foam falling out. However, these reports were rare.
One last pleasant surprise you will find is that the pillow tops are very large compared to it's rivals and are removable so you can throw them in the wash every so often. Overall, the comfort feels like it should be sitting in a higher price range as it absolutely nails the balance of firmness and softness you expect from the best extra firm mattress.
|Super comfortable Can be used with any frame Large pillow tops||Reports of loosening stitches after time Little more expensive|
However, once you unpackage the product from the tightly air sealed container, it firms up very quickly. The real fun begins on the first test lie down when you're expecting the comfort of a futon and then Voilà! the comfort of an expensive bed. The team behind the Otis Haley put years of research and development into a mattress that manages to keep it's firmness for years while still being soft on the back and bodily frame. We have read many reports of this item helping customers overcome back pains, body aches and other sleep related injuries from previous mattresses.
We did notice that the polyster can be a little slippery on the surface. Combine this with little to no seam to be found around the edges, one might look at infesting in a topper. This would help slightly soften up the surface too for those who may find it a little too firm. The only other issue we could find was the slight smell that lasted for the first day or two. This eventually went away, but to be safe, maybe sleep on the old mattress for the first night and then transfer this one in after a day of airing out.
|Best extra firm mattress disguised as futon Packaged for easy deliver & transport Comfortable top layer||Slightly slippery top surface Initial smell that dissipates after 2 days|
When it first arrives you will find it a little clunky and large to move around. It's not as compressed as other rivals we have tested here. But once you have opened it up and let it breathe, it normally takes around a day to expand to the correct size. This is a particularly popular item for those who are looking for a travel bed for those comfy rests nights in the RV. One of the major reasons for this popularity is it's ability to squeeze comfortably into most tight spaces without disturbing or sagging the even plane of the top layer.
Lastly, we were most impressed with the complete lack of smell emitted from the mattress. Normally for a foam material such as this you would potentially get a large waft of it straight out of the box. However because Brentwood does not use toxic chemicals and flame retardants on their materials, the smell is no where to be found.
|Made in USA & 25 year warranty Squeezes into most spaces without compromise Non-smelling foam||Needs a day to expand to size No flame retardant technology|
We found that in testing the top stayed cool with the "surface cool" fibre technology that has been sewn into the quilt. These fibres and materials are all meet the health and environmental standards for polyurethane mattresses.
Interestingly, the technology keeping the comfort level so high is a mix between an air-cool memory foam and a gel-touch foam. In particular, this "gel-touch" mixes the best polyurethane foam with a gel substance. Effectively removing the pressure on your bones and body when you sleep. Further down the mattress is the air-cool memory foam that supports the lower back and spine.
For a lower cost mattress we were impressed that is was still able to reduce the transfer of motion when two people are on the bed. This is due to the Queen Simmons Beautyrest pocketed coil system. These each coil is uniquely position to match the shape of your body.
The only negative reports we could find were some of the mattresses showed signs of wear and tear after a few years. Therefore, maybe this mattress is great for the guest bedroom where it does not see as much regular usage.
This is a great lower cost purchase that supports the lower back very well and sustains it's extra firm feel.
|Optimal for stomach & back sleepers Remains cool on body surface Reduces transfer of motion||Possible wear and tear after a few years No warranty|
We really liked that from the moment of arrival, the bed was ready to be used. It arrives uncompressed and does not require any time to decompress (unlike some other items we have reviewed here). Furthermore, there was no Oder or gas smell when packaging came off. When we tested the mattress out on the first night, you immediately feel the 5-Zone Convoluted Foam. Creating a firm core, overlaid with a soft cushion top. Inside is a 360 Degree Foam encasement which will ensure the edges of the bed stay nice and solid.
Now keep in mind this is an entry level item that has had one or two reports of sagging. So far, after 3 months of testing this product, we have not seen such reported sagging, but it's important to keep this in mind. Also, we found it difficult to sit upright and read or work on the computer in the bed. The foam tends to allow you to sink in a little when you put an excessive amount of pressure on one particular area.
We were impressed how much of the modern mattress technology they could fit into this item while keeping the price so low. Chase after the Sleep Inc. BodyComfort if you're after a great deal for an extra firm mattress.
|Made in USA & 10 year warranty No smells Edges remained solid after continuous usage||Sinking on excess pressure points Some reports of sagging|
This bed uses the Tencel sleep-surface climate technology. This innovative tech allows much more breathing room for the top layer. And that results in a regulated temperature for all the surface area in contact with your body.Below this layer, there is a gel material which is perfect for absorbing the impact of a tossing and turning partner as well as increasing the longevity of the bed itself. Under the gel layer is the workhorse of the bed with the memory foam and pocketed coil system making the bed firm while still conforming to the shape of your body.
We found that the mattress worked with three different bases we tested it on, producing the same comfort level on each occasion.
Although this bed is a little more expensive than the others we have reviewed here, you will still find you're buying at bed that has the firmness and longevity of something that would normally cost triple the price.
|Gel layer absorbs movement of partner Best at keeping body surface cool Meets the curves of the body with excellent cushioning||Little more expensive Very very firm (be warned)|
Reasons to invest in an Extra Firm Mattress?
Extra firm mattresses were never all that trendy in the world of beds. Mainly because the technology to create a comfortable form mattress has only emerged in recent years. We only need to delve back in time to the age of water beds to see the wide range of bedding trends. Wasn't it was strange that some people enjoyed the chance of motion sickness while trying to fall asleep? But I digress.
Here on the The Doctors, they attempt to find the best extra firm mattress for your needs:
The focus shifted from sensation of feeling to the science of sleeping. Consumers demanded answers as to how a consistent good nights sleep was achieved. Science also started to link chronic medical issues to how a person slept and what exactly they slept on. So years of research and trial and error push the mattress technology forward, leading to less focus on trendy bedroom ideas and more on curing that nagging back pain.
The times of a firm mattress sitting on box springs with the mattress itself containing an innerspring coil are long gone. For lovers of the firm mattress, this was a throw up between your comfort and the support you were looking for in a bed. However, break open the bubbly, because mattress technology has flourished to offer the consumer a wide variety of makes and types. Mattresses are often now classified as hybrid, latex, memory foam, or inner spring.
Advantages of Going Firm
- No Sagging - Your body will be kept in the correct wight distribution while it rests. The means that there will not be additional pressure on any particular muscles or joints. In other words, you won't be waking up in the middle of the night with pins and needles.
- Correct Spinal Position - In the world of sleep ergonomics, science has shown that a reduced amount of padding will lead to having the correct spine position when sleeping. This is mainly because the weight of your body is distributed evenly across your bones, placing much less stress on the spine.
- Better Breathing - When the mattress is able to stop your lower back from flopping into the position, your airways have much more room to breath. In turn, this leads to more oxygen intake and increasing the potential for the brain to enter a deeper sleep.
- Helps Keeping in Position - Many sleepers nowadays enjoy using items to ensure that keep in the correct sleeping position. Pillows, body pillows and other similar objects fulfil this purpose and are much easier to position on a firmer mattress. This can especially be the case with pregnant women who use pregnancy pillows when sleeping.
- Out of the Bedroom - Research now shows that the benefits of a good nights sleep can have huge impacts on your daily life. When your body slips into a deeper sleep, the activity to stimulate the mending of soft tissue kicks in. Your body repairs muscle tissue and balances out insulin levels. All of this is amplified with a good nights rest and when your on a firm mattress, your chances of this occurring dramatically increase.
What Type of Firm Mattress to Choose?
These mattresses come in two different varieties, continuous coil or open coil. The main difference between the two is in the springs. Open coil have individual springs moulded together by a single wire. Whereas continuous coil are an individual length of wire whorled into the springs.
The main advantages of a coil mattress is that in general you will find these are a cheaper mattress as the technology is now a little dated and supply is higher. They are also rather light compared to the other types on the market.
However, the wear and tear is higher because the springs all function as one unit. This means if you roll over, you will probably wake up the person lying next to you as well.
The latest market trends lean kindly on the memory foam technology. This market breakthrough started in the pillow segment where Tempur (a market leader in memory foam) took the industry by storm with their NASA developed version of the memory foam. The material uses your body heat to form the perfectly sculpted mould for your body to rest within.
The main advantage is that once your body forms this mould, it is far less resistant to movement, reducing joint and bone pressure while improving blood circulation.
However, in summer you may sometimes feel the overheating of having so much of your body in contact with the surface of the mattress. Also keep in mind that the cost of this technology is not cheap either.
The composition of this type of mattress is a synthetic latex which is design specifically to mould to a shape pressed against it. This is slightly different from a natural latex which is sourced for the trunks of rubber producing trees.
Latex has it's advantages of not hosting the bed bugs because of the airflow through the material. This means that the materials respire and resist the pressures of overheating while being in contact with the surface of your body.
The best extra firm mattress lovers will tend to lean towards this material as it tends to be a little firmer than it's counterparts. However, you will find it is not a lightweight option and if you go towards to cheaper end of the market, you may find inconsistency in the mattress surface appear over time.
By far the most well known types of mattresses on the market. They are renowned for having the springs stitched into every area of the fabric pockets in the mattress. Some retailers offer the choice of multiple sides that contain different firmness all in the one mattress.
The main advantage of pocket sprung bests are couples can sleep more soundly. As no matter what the shape or size of the people in the bed, the springs are separate for each person. This springs can be adjusted too, meaning you can customise the firmness to your needs. These springs allow for excellent airflow in the mattress, meaning overheating is not as much of an issue.
Those with allergies to certain materials however may want to avoid this type of material. These beds are often filled with items such as lambs wool.
How Do You Care for your New Mattress?
Tags and Receipt
Highly recommended that you hang onto your proof of purchase for any times you need to claim a warranty service. Also keep the tags on the mattress, these are important when a warranty service is claimed as they contain important service information.
Your best option for keeping a your need purchase clean is to buy a mattress protector. Generally these are fairly cheap and can keep off the stains, liquids and allergens.
Foundation & Frame Support
It's surprising to many consumers that the frame support and/or foundation that the mattress lays upon can actually effect your warranty. Correct support will mean your mattress can last many more years as the base and top will work together to distribute the weight evenly. This can also be a safety recommendation as the foundation needs to be Fire Retardant Complaint in many states across the US.
This is not normally required nowadays, however, it's highly recommended that a rotation is undertaken every few months to extend the lifetime of your new purchase.
One more important note, when you are moving it's best to carry the mattress in an upright position, cover it in plastic and never bend or place in an obscure position. If you ever have to put the mattress away for long periods of time, try to store it in a flat position.
